At The Zoo

First I saw the white bear, then I saw the black;
Then I saw the camel with a hump upon his back;
Then I saw the grey wolf, with mutton in his maw;
Then I saw the wombat waddle in the straw;
Then I saw the elephant a-waving of his trunk;
Then I saw the monkeys-mercy, how unpleasantly they-smelt!

  1. I chose this poem because it reminded me of my visit to the Cape May County Zoo. I took Olivia and Goerge over the summer and we had such a good time. I remember Olivia commenting on how "smelly" some of the animals were. What did you think about while reading this poem?

    I also want you to notice the use of rhyme. What are the rhyming words in this poem?

  22. As I was reading this poem, A picture popped into my head and I saw what the zoo might have looked like.

    By the way, I looked the word 'mutton' up on google and it does mean meat, but there is a second meaning to it which is the square of a body of any size of type.

  28. Mrs. Powell- I think that the word 'mutton' is used to represent meat because the next few words say in his maw. The only thing that can go into your mouth (i looked maw up, it means mouth) is meat.
